The sedan was named after the city of Lucerne in Switzerland. The Lucerne was Buick's flagship model up until the creation of the 2nd generation Buick LaCrosse. Each Buick Lucerne has "Ventiports" on the front fenders corresponding to the engine cylinders, 6 for V6 models and 8 for V8 models. The Buick Lucerne was eventually discontinued in 2011 with no replacement model announced. The Lucerne was introduced with the standard 3.8 liter Buick V6 (also known as the GM 3800 engine), with a 4.6 liter Cadillac Northstar LD8 V8 and the Chevrolet Corvette's Magnetic Ride Control active suspension available as options.
